In a tragic incident, the death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria has risen over 1,200, while hundreds are said to be injured and still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
According to the details, the earthquake, which hit in the early hours of Monday, was felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. Meanwhile, another earthquake measuring 4.6 magnitude on the Richter scale has also shaken Cyprus.
The epicenter of the larger quake was near the city of Gaziantep in Turkey, and it was felt as far away as Cyprus, while the epicenter of the aftershock was recorded 75 km southeast of Famagusta, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The new earthquake followed a series of “small tsunamis” off Famagusta coast said eastern Mediterranean island’s geological survey department.

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that 912 people have been killed in Turkey with almost 5,383 more injured, while Syria’s state news emergency has reported over 320 dead in the country, with 1,000 wounded.
The Turkish president added that search and rescue agencies can’t predict how high the death toll might rise as hundreds are believed to be trapped under the rubble.
Meanwhile, other countries have shown concern over the earthquake in Turkey and Syria and offered support in any way possible.
“The U.S. is profoundly concerned by today’s destructive earthquake in Turkiye and Syria.” a government official, Jake Sullivan, said on Twitter. “I have been in touch with Turkish officials to relay that we stand ready to provide any and all needed assistance.” he added
