The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that Eid Al-Fitr will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, after the Shawwal crescent marking the end of Ramadan was not sighted. This year, Ramadan will last the full 30 days, with Tuesday being the final day.
The moon-sighting committee in the UAE had requested Muslims to search for the Shawwal crescent. Ramadan lasts either 29 or 30 days according to the Islamic Hijri calendar, and the sighting of the crescent determines the end of one month and the beginning of the next.
With Eid Al-Fitr 2024 falling on Wednesday, residents can expect the holiday to last the full week, including weekends before and after the holiday, making it a nine-day break from April 6 to 14. Work will resume on Monday, April 15.
