Residents of the UAE may soon enjoy improved phone services using satellite connectivity. This means even in areas without regular phone signals, people can still make calls and use the internet on their smartphones. The UAE has teamed up with Al Yah Satellite Communications Company to make this happen. They aim to upgrade regular smartphones with satellite features, allowing users to access services globally. This partnership could offer satellite benefits without needing bulky equipment.
They plan to use Yahsat’s low earth orbit (LEO) system for seamless smartphone connectivity. This will provide better accessibility for users worldwide. Initially, they will offer voice and messaging services this year, followed by texting and IoT capabilities in 2025, using Yahsat’s geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites.
The CEO of e& UAE, Masood M. Sharif Mahmood, believes this partnership will revolutionize global connectivity, bridging the digital gap. Ali Al Hashemi, Group CEO of Yahsat, highlights their collaboration in various areas to enhance the ecosystem, as part of their Project SKY initiative.
Project SKY is the first phase of their strategy, focusing on voice, texting, and data applications. In February, Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a subsidiary of Yahsat, introduced the Skyphone, an Android smartphone with satellite capabilities. It features a retractable satellite antenna, enabling satellite services when needed. With two nano-SIM card slots, users can stay connected even in remote areas without cellular coverage.
Overall, this partnership aims to provide reliable phone services using satellites, enhancing connectivity for UAE residents and beyond. With advancements like the Skyphone, people can enjoy communication services in areas where traditional networks may not reach.
