The United Nations has confirmed that a vehicle of the UN Military Observers in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was damaged after being hit by an “unidentified object” near Rawalakot in the Chirikot Sector on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control (LoC).
“The Mission is currently investigating the incident,” said the Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq in response to a question from APP at the regular briefing in New York.
The incident occurred when the UN Military Observers were conducting routine inspection near Rawalakot in the Chirikot Sector on Friday.
“UNMOGIP personnel and the driver were not harmed but the vehicle sustained some damage,” the spokesman said.
The Indian Army on Friday targeted a United Nations (UN) vehicle across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Chirikot Sector according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
According to the details, the Indian Army deliberately targeted the two United Nations Military Observers (UNMOs) on-board the vehicle while on their way to meet the ceasefire violation victims in Polas Village in Chirikot Sector.
“It must be noted that UN vehicles are clearly recognizable even from long distances due to their distinct make and type and clearly visible markings.” said DG ISPR on Twitter. “While the vehicle was damaged, the two UNMOs luckily remained unharmed. They were safely rescued & evacuated by Pakistan Army to Rawalakot.” said ISPR on Twitter.
Pakistan condemned the attack by Indian Army on the UN vehicle and called out the neighboring country’s forces for their ill-intentions. “Such illegal and unlawful acts against all established international norms, signify mal-intent of Indian Army to target not only innocent civilians residing along the Line of Control but UN Peace Keepers as well.” said the statement by ISPR.
“This act only goes to show Indian Army’s complete disregard to principles enshrined in UN Charter.” said DG ISPR. “It is indeed a new low for Indian Army.”
“Pakistan Army stands in solidarity with UNMOGIP officials and appreciates the selfless services rendered by all members of UNMOGIP in discharge of their UN mandated duties.” the statement continued.
